Royal Tiger offers the AR15-A1 rifle with a reproduction US Government marked lower receiver to stay with the historical theme of the rest of the parts. It is an AR15-A1, with the “-A1” referring to the multitude of genuine Colt M16-A1 parts that make up this rifle. Since it is built on a semi-auto AR15 lower receiver they don’t call this a M16-A1. They call this the New COLT AR-15 A1 RIFLE. Next came a fully assembled rifle that Royal Tiger made with as many vintage M16-A1 parts as they could. I will write a more in-depth review of the M16-A1 parts kit, with LOTS of pictures of how the parts arrived, cleaning in the Hornady Hot Tub ultrasonic cleaner, assembly, and field use. When I held this genuine battle veteran, vintage Colt M16-A1 in my hands for the first time it made the part of my brain that appreciates history tingle. Here is a picture of it loosely put together on an AR15 lower receiver while I wait for a reproduction US Government marked lower receiver, period-correct barrel and Form-2 from the ATF to restore it to its prior full-auto glory as a Dealer Post Sample. It was an M16-A1 parts kit that I am still working on assembling (review to come). My skepticism quickly faded when the first box arrived.

I have found these genuine Colt M16-based guns to be some of the most interesting and intriguing ever. However, as a licensed collector, I have found other types of military surplus rifles to be rather interesting. As far as AR15s go, I prefer more modern, high-tech ARs with evolutionary improvements that improve functionality. When Royal Tiger Imports asked me to review their recently imported vintage Colt M16-A1 kits and rifles I wasn’t overly excited. Frankly, the recent “retro rifle” craze hasn’t got my juices flowing either. I’ve never had any interest in trying to make a new gun look like it was abused in battle. You can be forgiven if you don’t get all weak in the knees looking at the latest “Battleworn” Cerakote AR that the kids are drooling over on Instagram.
